But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the palpable tension and the clear safety concerns, the tournament organizers, and indeed the ATP, initially seemed to push forward. An ATP statement confirmed the suspension due to a security alert, emphasizing that "The health, safety and wellbeing of our players, staff and tournament personnel is our priority." Following consultations with local authorities, play was ultimately canceled for the rest of the day as a precautionary measure. However, the decision to even begin the tournament in the first place, given the prevailing regional climate, has raised eyebrows. Finn Bass, a British player ranked world No. 296, expressed his bewilderment on social media, stating, "Cannot believe they’ve gone ahead and not cancelled the event. Madness."
And this is the part most people miss... This incident didn't occur in a vacuum. Projectiles had been observed over the UAE since Saturday, following Iran's retaliatory missile strikes on U.S. bases in the region, and in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, in response to American and Israeli actions in Tehran. Astonishingly, the doubles final of the Dubai Tennis Championships did proceed on Saturday, with the ATP attributing this to guidance from local authorities. The singles final, however, was not played, but this was due to a hamstring injury to Tallon Griekspoor, not security concerns. Even with these events, players like Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev, who were in Dubai, were reportedly attempting to leave the country, with some considering a six-hour drive to Oman to find a way out. Around 40 tennis staff, including media and ATP employees, were also trying to depart the city.
While players like Medvedev publicly stated they were safe and staying with friends, the situation underscored the precariousness of travel arrangements.
