Russia's Hypersonic Strike: A Wake-Up Call for Europe?
In a move that has sent shockwaves across the continent, Russia unleashed its hypersonic Oreshnik missile on Ukraine, striking a nerve at the heart of Europe's security. But here's where it gets controversial: this attack isn't just about Ukraine; it's a message to the entire Western alliance.

Amidst broader strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and drone manufacturing sites near Kyiv, the Russian military launched a calculated assault. Moscow claimed this retaliation was in response to a Ukrainian drone strike on Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence in Novgorod, an allegation vehemently denied by both Kyiv and US President Donald Trump.
The aftermath was devastating: Ukraine reported four fatalities and at least 22 injuries in Kyiv, while critical infrastructure in Lviv was hit by an unidentified ballistic missile traveling at an astonishing 13,000 km/h.
The Oreshnik's Impact Zone
The Oreshnik strike targeted Lviv, a western Ukrainian city located approximately 550 km from the capital, Kyiv, and a mere 70 km from the Polish border.
Unveiling the Oreshnik
The Oreshnik, an intermediate-range ballistic missile, derives its name from the Russian word for 'hazel tree,' a reference to the missile's multiple warheads, which streak across the sky in a pattern reminiscent of the tree's branches.
Hypersonic missiles, traveling at speeds of Mach 5 or more, can maneuver mid-flight, making them incredibly difficult to track and intercept. The Oreshnik is also nuclear-capable, designed to carry a nuclear warhead, though it may not always be deployed with one.
Russia has only fired the Oreshnik once before, in 2024, when it claimed to have attacked a Ukrainian military factory. This attack came shortly after the US, under former President Joe Biden, authorized Ukraine to use US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to strike targets in Russia.
The Significance of This Attack
During the 2024 attack, the Oreshnik missiles were equipped with dummy warheads, causing limited damage to Ukraine. However, if the recent attack involved missiles with explosives, it would mark the first time Russia has fully utilized the Oreshnik's non-nuclear capabilities against Ukraine.
Additionally, the location of the target is significant. In 2024, the missiles hit Dnipro, located in east-central Ukraine, far from the country's borders. This time, the strike was close to Poland, a NATO member.
Kyiv has labeled this proximity to the EU and NATO border as a "grave threat" to European security. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote, "Such a strike close to [the] EU and NATO border is a grave threat to the security on the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community. We demand strong responses to Russia's reckless actions."
Cyrille Bret, a Russia expert at the Montaigne Institute in Paris, told AFP, "Vladimir Putin is using this to communicate with the West, because he could undoubtedly achieve the same operational effects without this missile."
The UK government, France, and Germany have condemned Russia's use of the missile as "escalatory and unacceptable."
Why Does This Matter?
This latest Russian attack comes at a critical juncture in peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, which, in February, will enter its fifth year. The attack risks derailing these negotiations, especially given the significant disagreements between the two sides on core issues like territory.
Analysts and observers have previously highlighted territorial concessions as a major sticking point. Trump's 28-point peace plan for Ukraine, unveiled in 2025, involved Ukraine ceding not only large areas occupied by Russia but also territories currently under Kyiv's control. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that this is unacceptable.
Most analysts are skeptical of any progress on this front and believe the latest escalation in fighting will not significantly complicate already challenging talks.
"I don't think there is anything to derail at this point," said Marina Miron, an analyst at King's College London. "The peace process is not going well due to disagreements on key issues between Ukraine and Russia."
Mikhail Alexseev, a professor of political science at San Diego State University, told Al Jazeera, "Moscow's goal is not to 'end or derail' peace talks but to 'keep them going as a cover and an enabler of continuing Russian brutal invasion in an attempt to wipe Ukraine off the world's map regardless of human cost.'"
"Russia started the war, and Putin can end it in five minutes if he wanted to. All he needs to do is agree to [US] President [Donald] Trump's unconditional ceasefire proposals made earlier this year."
