Karl Dunbar is Back: A Familiar Face Returns to the Jets' Defensive Line Coaching Staff
The New York Jets have made a strategic move by rehiring Karl Dunbar as their defensive line coach. This decision brings back a familiar face to the team, as Dunbar previously served in the same role from 2012 to 2014. With a wealth of experience and a proven track record, Dunbar is set to make an impact once again.
Dunbar, a 58-year-old veteran of the NFL, brings 19 years of defensive line coaching expertise to the table. His journey began with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he spent the past eight seasons as their defensive line coach. Prior to that, he had a successful stint with the Chicago Bears in 2004 and later moved to the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2011. Dunbar's coaching prowess was further showcased when he joined Rex Ryan's staff as a defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2015.
During his time with the Steelers, Dunbar played a pivotal role in the team's success, as they led the NFL with 392 sacks. His impact was also evident in his first stint with the Jets, where he mentored standout players like DT Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson. Richardson, who was named the AP's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2013, recorded an impressive 8 sacks in 2014, while Wilkerson had a 10.5-sack campaign in 2013.
Dunbar's own playing career was equally impressive. A three-year starter at LSU from 1986 to 1989, he was a second-team All-SEC defensive tackle as a senior. He was drafted by the Steelers in the eighth round of the 1990 NFL Draft, and went on to play three seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals, registering 27 tackles in 21 games. Dunbar's versatility and understanding of the game make him a valuable asset to any coaching staff.
Before joining the NFL, Dunbar honed his coaching skills at the high school level in Louisiana from 1996 to 1997. He then moved on to the college ranks, serving as the defensive line coach at Nicholls State from 1998 to 1999, strength and conditioning coach at LSU from 2000 to 2001, and defensive line coach at Oklahoma State from 2002 to 2003. Dunbar's expertise was further recognized when he held the defensive line coach title at LSU in 2005 and Alabama from 2016 to 2017, working under the renowned coach Nick Saban.
With his wealth of experience and proven track record, Karl Dunbar is poised to make a significant impact once again as the Jets' defensive line coach. His return to the team brings a sense of familiarity and expertise, which will undoubtedly be a boost to the team's defensive line.
