Unveiling the Mystery: Apple's Upcoming Chip Lineup in iOS 26.3
Apple's latest iOS release hints at some exciting new hardware!
The iOS 26.3 release candidate has sparked curiosity with its references to unreleased Apple chips. But here's where it gets intriguing: these chips might be the highly anticipated M5 Max and M5 Ultra.
On Wednesday, Apple released the iOS 26.3 RC, a week after the third developer beta. While the update seems featureless, it's the hidden references that have caught everyone's attention. The software includes files that allude to unannounced Apple processing units, leaving tech enthusiasts and industry experts alike speculating.
The M5 Max and M5 Ultra: What We Know So Far
Given the close relationship between macOS 26.3 and the upcoming MacBook Pro models, it's no surprise that the iOS 26.3 RC mentions the M5 Max chip. The code also hints at the M5 Ultra, which could debut with an upgraded Mac Studio.
MacRumors has pointed out that the iOS 26.3 RC build references the T6051 chip, also known as H17C. Additionally, there's the T6052 system-on-chip, identified as H17D in the code.
Apple's naming conventions provide some clues. The H17C chip is expected to be the M5 Max, following Apple's past use of the letter "C" for "Max" chips, such as the M1 Max (H13C) and M4 Max (H16C). Similarly, the H17D chip could be the M5 Ultra, as the M1 Ultra through M3 Ultra chips all used a "D" naming scheme.
However, there's a twist. The iOS 26.3 RC doesn't mention the T6050 or H17S chip, which is expected to be the M5 Pro. This raises questions about Apple's internal naming system for the M5 family. Could Apple have changed its naming conventions, or is this a red herring?
Upgraded MacBook Pros: Coming Soon
Regardless of the naming mystery, upgraded MacBook Pro models with these new chips are expected to launch with macOS 26.3 in February or March 2026. This aligns with previous leaks and Apple's typical release timelines.
