GNAT and NAGRAT Condemn Assault of Kade SHS Teacher
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) have jointly condemned the recent assault on a teacher at Kade Senior High School in the Eastern Region. The incident occurred at night, shortly after the release of the WASSCE results, when students allegedly attacked the teacher, accusing them of being responsible for their poor performance and denying them the opportunity to engage in examination malpractices.
Thomas Tanko Musah, GNAT's General Secretary, emphasized the importance of teacher safety, advising teachers to prioritize their well-being and remove themselves from dangerous situations. He stated, 'Teachers, wherever you are, if your life is threatened, you are allowed to leave. Just inform the appropriate persons and leave. The Labour Law allows that, and we urge our members to vacate the premises whenever they feel their lives are in danger.'
Additionally, Musah addressed comments made by Janet Nabla, the presidential candidate of the People's National Party (PNP), who had made inflammatory remarks against teachers following the mass failure in the WASSCE. He urged Nabla to refrain from such statements, warning that continued attacks on teachers could lead to appropriate responses from the teaching community.
The Eastern Regional Chapter of NAGRAT also called for immediate investigations and decisive action against the students involved in the assault. Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, the Eastern Regional NAGRAT Chairman, stressed the need for the law to be applied to the students to serve as a deterrent to others.
