A crushing 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series has left England captain Ben Stokes with a bitter taste, acknowledging that his team's own mistakes played a significant role in their downfall.
"Australia were exceptional, no doubt about it," Stokes began. "But we have to take a long, hard look at ourselves. We let ourselves down, and that's the truth."
Stokes' post-match presentation was a mix of praise for the opposition and honest self-reflection. "They [Australia] had outstanding performances, but we also created our own problems. We know we're capable of so much more."
And here's where it gets controversial: Stokes believes that England's lapses in concentration, especially after building strong positions, cost them dearly. "We needed to be more ruthless. If we'd added another 100 runs in the final Test, and kept Australia's first innings score down by a similar margin, the outcome could have been very different."
But it's not all doom and gloom for England. Stokes highlighted the performances of Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue as positive takeaways. "Bethell showed incredible resilience and skill for a 22-year-old, and Tongue just keeps getting better. We have a lot of talent to build on."
The England captain also expressed gratitude for the support his team received throughout the tour. "The Barmy Army is an incredible force, and their support means the world to us. Even staying until the end, when things weren't going our way, shows their dedication."
On the other side of the coin, Australia's stand-in captain credited their home advantage as a key factor in their success. "We understand these conditions, and that gave us an edge."
And this is the part most people miss: Australia's success wasn't just down to their home advantage. It was also due to the consistent performance of their veteran, Mitchell Starc. At 35, Starc played every Test, bowling an incredible 153.1 overs and taking 31 wickets - the most in the series. "It's a privilege to be part of this team. We've got a great mix of youth and experience, and that showed in this series."
So, what's next for England? "We have a long break before our next Test series. It's a chance to reflect, learn, and come back stronger."
And for Australia? "We're enjoying the moment, but we know there's more work to be done. The World Test Championship is a long road, and we have to keep performing at this level."
